The Sandpoint BID and "Vitalization"
|
The citizens of Sandpoint have the vision of a fully "vitalized" business district that is a center of commercial and cultural activity not just for Sandpoint, but for Bonner county, North Idaho and the Inland Northwest. To help accomplish this, business owners joined together in 2000 to form a Business Improvement District (BID) like those in cities across the nation and in Idaho. The BID is managed by the Downtown Sandpoint Business Association, with an elected board of directors, under the aegis of the City of Sandpoint.
What is a BID?
• A self-governed business district established at the request of a majority of the business owners within a geographic boundary
• A permanent, equitable mechanism to generate funds for services within the district
• An opportunity for local business owners to participate in the planning and implementation of future projects
• A proven mechanism for vitalization and economic growth
What can BID funds provide for?
• Marketing programs, retail promotion and public events
• Parking facilities and other physical improvements
• Marketing, management and maintenance of the business district
• A downtown staff dedicated to serving the needs of the business district and who will organize volunteers to implement enhancement projects and programs
A BID also:
• Enables all business owners within the BID to participate, provide feedback and become involved in local development
• Provides match funds for grant programs and lend credibility to public and private funding requests
All businesses within the Sandpoint BID pay a monthly assessment*, determined by net square footage according to the following fee schedule:
0 - 400 sq. ft. $10
401 - 1250 sq. ft. $20
1251 - 2500 sq. ft. $35
2501 - 5000 sq. ft. $50
5000+ sq. ft. $65
*Non-profit organizations pay the same amount on an annual rather than monthly basis.
